Property Statistics

Here are some recent property statistics from the Ministry of Justice:

Possession claims: October-December 2022:  Possession claims issued by landlords rose by 42% as against the same quarter in 2021 (from 14,436 to 20,460). Possession orders rose by 135% (6,865 to 16,158) and there was a 103% increase in the number of warrants issued (4,285 to 8,717). A similar increase was seen in mortgage possession claims which rose by 23% (2,570 to 3,160), with a 50% increase in possession orders (1,650 to 2,482) and an 88% increase in warrants (1,121 to 2,112).

Local authorities: In December 2022 and January 2023, the DLUHC published various updates to the “live tables” of data. In 2021-22, there were 88,591 local authority lettings. This is a small increase on 2020-21(80,171) but still well below the peak of 209,923 for 2004-5 (the first year for which records were made available in this format). Average weekly rents for local authority tenants in 2021-22 were £89.69 in England (up from £88.17 in the previous year). For private registered providers, the equivalent figure was £98.05 (up from £96.60).

Help to buy: In February 2023, the DLUHC published a cumulative update on the help to buy scheme. Between 1 April 2013 and 30 September 2022, a total of 375,654 properties have been purchased under the scheme with total loans worth £23.7 billion.

Private rents: In December 2022, the Office for National Statistics published an experimental data set dealing with rent increases in the UK for the 12 months to December 2022. The UK average was a 4% increase in rents, with England at 4.1%, Wales at 3.5% and Scotland at 4.4%.
